Notable works by Ritsos include Tractor (1934), Pyramids (1935), Epitaphios (1936), Vigil (1941–1953), Romiosini (1954) and 18 short songs of the bitter Motherland (18 λιανοτράγουδα της πικρής πατρίδας) (1973). This happened in 1938 in a central spot in Athens, along with five hundred other books—ironically at Hadrian's Gate, named for a Roman emperor who supported and sheltered the arts and letters. This is the first time Epitaphios has been published in book form in English. Yiannis Ritsos (1909-1990) was one of most prolific European poets of the 20th century.
