This important book critically addresses the `becoming West' of Europe and investigates the `becoming Modern' of the world. Drawing on the work of Derrida, Foucault, Levinas, Lyotard, Merleau-Ponty and Ricoeur, the book proposes that the question of postmodernity is inseparable from that of postcoloniality.

Occidentalism ought to be a book that looks at Occidentalism as the obverse of Orientalism, showing the parallels in these stereotyped ways of seeing the other while also surveying the material and intellectual contexts in which these ways of thinking arose. Occidentalism is often a counterpart to the term orientalism as used by Edward Said in his book of that title, which refers to and identifies Western stereotypes of the Eastern world, the Orient. Occidentalism: A Short History of Anti-Westernism by Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit 165pp, Atlantic, £14.99 This book seeks to account for anti-western attitudes. Orientalism is a 1978 book by Edward W. Said, in which the author establishes the eponymous term "Orientalism" as a critical concept to describe the West's commonly contemptuous depiction and portrayal of "The East," i.e. the Orient. Societies and peoples of the Orient are those who inhabit the places of Asia, North Africa, and the Middle East. Occidentalism as defined in this book is nothing else than a counter-attack, a self-defense of the all powerful in the Not-West.

Twenty-five years ago, Edward Said’s Orientalism spawned a generation of scholarship on the denigrating and dangerous mirage of “the East” in the Western colonial mind. But “the West” is the more dangerous mirage of our own time, Ian Buruma and Avishai Margalit argue, and the idea of “the West” in the minds of its self-proclaimed enemies remains largely Unfortunately, Occidentalism is a far cry from the eloquent and gracious Inventing Japan. Buruma and Margalit succeed in combining their knowledge into one book that does not read as if it was written by two authors, but fail in making a clear and coherent argument to explain Occidentalism (i.e. the way the East views the West). Occidentalism is described as “the dehumanizing picture of the West painted by its enemies”.
